Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion usually occurs during a child’s second grade year. Participation in grade one classes is highly recommended to set a foundation for learning about these sacraments. All participants (Faith Formation & St. Pius X School) must register through the Faith Formation Office. Participation in parent meetings and parent/child retreats is required.
The Sacramental program is divided into two parts during the year, focusing separately on each Sacrament. In early October, we schedule a Parent-only information meeting about Reconciliation and gives a framework for the year. A book, workbook, and other materials are handed out specifically for preparation for First Reconciliation – these materials are completed at home and turned in usually by early December. A First Reconciliation Parent-Child Retreat is scheduled for mid-November, and the actual Sacrament takes place on either the first or second Saturday of December. These dates will be provided in the materials handed out at the Parent Orientation.
The First Communion portion of the Sacramental program follows the same format: A Parent-only Meeting takes place late January or early to mid-February, where, again, books and other materials are handed out, to be completed at home. The Parent-Child retreat is usually scheduled in April, however may take place in March, subject to the date of Easter that year.
First Communion Masses are usually scheduled for the first three weekends in May. The sign-up for Masses is sent home in January and confirmed at the Parent Meeting.
3+ Sacramental Classes
This program is designed for children in grades 3 and above who have been baptized in the Catholic Church but did not receive the sacraments First Reconciliation and/or First Eucharist in the Second grade. Students in the program will participate in Wednesday night Faith Formation classes or attend the St. Pius X School during their preparation and meet individually (with parent or sponsor involvement) or in a small classroom setting with a Catechist to prepare for the reception of the sacraments. Study includes an overview of Catholic teachings, traditions and sacramental preparation. Family involvement is encouraged.
